Film Review: Life Of Pi

Since its release Life Of Pi has dominated social media sites, and been called one of the most stunning films of all time. Hailed as a ‘must-see’, and ‘the journey of a life time’, there was no way I was going to miss out on seeing it on the big screen.

Based on the novel by Yann Martel, and brought to life by Oscar-winning director Ang Lee, there is no denying that Life Of Pi is a spectacular feast of colours, landscapes and excitement. Visually, it is nothing short of breathtaking. It’s a truly magical experience

The story, simple on the surface, is exciting and unlike any other — a young boy and his family sell their Zoo in India and decide to start a new life in Canada. They, along with all the Zoo’s animals including a giant Bengal Tiger, set off across the Pacific Ocean. A thunderstorm hits, and what happens next is an intoxicating, and unbelievable tale of survival and hope.

Shipwrecked, and stranded in the middle of the ocean with nothing but a small boat, and an enormous tiger for company, Pi knows he must not give up hope if he has any chance of surviving.

As the day goes by, Pi forms a unique relationship with the Tiger and the two discover an array of hidden treasures, and mysterious islands as they fight to stay alive. Through moments of humour and horror, the audience is treated to a gripping story, and Suraj Sharma gave a beautiful, and believable performance as Pi, a character in a frightening, and unbelievable situation.

The greatest achievement of the entire film was Ang Lee’s stunning directing and his ability to turn the book into a magical, fantastical and wondrous on screen adventure.

Life of Pi is an incredible cinematic experience — and everyone should see it at least once, in 3D and on the big screen. But due to the bizarre ending, it is the type of film you might only want to watch once.

Have you seen it? What did you think? Would you watch it again?
